Referral System Updated

Today, Checkpoints updated their referral system making promo/bonus codes less valuable. Now, instead of receiving 300 points (or even the 100 points it was lowered to a few weeks back) new members will only receive 50 points! If you want to get the 50 points now before the bonus is reduced to zero sign up now.

Perhaps this means that they have a lot of members already and are now focusing their money on growing the program instead of growing membership. This could actually be a good think for current Checkpointers since it means we'll hopefully see new earning opportunities within the app.

They've also revamped the reward system for referring a friend. Previously, users would receive 150 points per friend referred, now current members get 100% match of the points their friends earn for 2 weeks. Unless your friend is reallllly into scanning and checking in this likely means less points for you.

Update (8/6/13): Refers now get 100pts per member they refer and 100% match on points earned by that member for the first two weeks (max 7500pts).

What's New For Checkpoints in 2013?

Given we're almost half way through the year already but there have been a few new developments in Checkpoints that are worth mentioning.

The first is the addition of Tapjoy as an earning method. Tapjoy is in a number of free games and it's a platform that allows you to earn points or coins by signing up for offers or demoing products. There are several free earnings opportunities such as watching a video or sharing your email with a company. The most lucrative offers require you to signup for a service or even buy a product. Some seem very appealing (a month of free Netflix service) but if you opt for any that require you to share credit card information be sure to remember to cancel before the trial period is over!

Checkpoints also added a "watch video" option but watching a 20-30 second ad for 1 point hardly seems worth it. In contrast, watching a video in Tapjoy rewards you with a coin that can be used to win up to tens of thousands of points.

Checkpoints has recently added a new reward. You can exchange 100 points for 10 coins. It’s a gamble for sure, but fun to try once in a while and a potential winner. I redeemed this reward twice, giving me 20 coins. I played both the scratch off and slot games with the coins. The first time I only one once, a measly 20 points, with my 10 coins. The second time I won several times for a total of 110 points.


So was it worth it? Not really since I spent 200 points and only got 130 back, but the second round of redemption and playing did net me 10 points. I’ve played the games a lot with coins I win from scanning, downloading other apps, and completing offers and generally find them rewarding. Perhaps I’ll redeem my points for coins again in the future and post the results. If you’ve done so please comment with your winnings, it’d be useful for all of us if we could determine the chance of 10 coins earning more than 100 points.
